This shiny fabric is particularly manufactured in Murshidabad, West Bengal. Everything related to sericulture to weaving and printing takes place, making the district the ‘Silk-Mecca’ of East India. Murshidabad has always had a high reputation for its quality silk. Murshidabad also has a Center of Sericulture Research and Training Institute.

These silk sarees from Murshidabad are very fine, light-weight and easy to drape. They are adorned with a variety of printed designs, both modern and traditional, and are good for formal as well as casual wear. Batik-printed designs are also popular on these silk sarees.

More often women of West Bengal purchase ‘silk-than’ (single colour raw silk) for personal use from the manufacturers. The silk-than consist two pieces of saree. Then they printed this than from reputed saree printers of Kolkata. This is very popular and also cost effective.
